Ready To Sleep Better?

Experts have differing opinions on exactly how much sleep we need a night but none doubt the importance of it. Study after study have shown that people suffering from sleep or wakefulness disorders. An estimated 15-20 percent of U.S. adults are more likely to suffer from chronic disorders including depression, substance abuse, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and stroke. Resilience to stress, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships are impaired by sleep deficiency. “A surefire way to increase happiness is to get better sleep,” says Sharene Garaman, Psy. D. “Nothing else works as well to increase someone’s well-being. No application, no treatment, no medicine, better than sleep. If someone isn’t getting good sleep, everything looks worse than it would with sleep.”

What Can Help?

  • Massage: Studies done on behalf of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) have shown that massage improves sleep in infants, children, adults, and the elderly, as well as in individuals with psychiatric disorders, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, lower back pain, cerebral palsy, and breast disease. Some types of massage can be more helpful with sleep issues than others. While a deep tissue or sports massage is great for healing and relieving pain, its stimulating effects may not always be conducive for sleeping. For a gentle approach to massage, The AromaTouch Technique® integrates calming essential oils such as lavender with a hot stone massage, which uses heat (versus firm pressure) to reach deeply into tissues.

  • Meditation: Kickstart your meditation practice and learn to live mindfully with any of our Meditation, Mindful Movement, Intuitive, or Energy Healers at Medicine Wheel Wellness.

  • Snowball Effect: Stress can interfere with deep sleep, which can increase stress. While sleep medication provides temporary symptomatic relief, it does not always improve the quality of sleep.

  • A report by the National Institutes of Mental Health found depression rates were 40 times higher for patients with insomnia than those without sleep problems. Mental health experts increasingly view depression or anxiety as an effect, rather than a cause, of insomnia.

  • Guided Imagery: “I do guided imagery and meditation at night,” says Nick Krauss, a personal trainer, class instructor, and certified imagery guide at Medicine Wheel Wellness. “It’s then that I’m trying to pull the day together. I do some of my best thinking at night. I’ve found that if I don’t use imagery or meditate, all this thinking will keep me up.” Research backs Nick up. Studies show that Interactive Guided Imagery (IGI) does indeed help establish healthy sleep patterns.

  • Biomat: The BioMat’s unique medical and therapeutic properties are based on Nobel prize-winning research into ionic channels and the same infrared technology that NASA identified as the safest and most beneficial type of light wave. By producing deep-penetrating, far infrared rays along with negative ions that activate the body at the molecular level, the BioMat is capable of administering deep soothing stimulation.

Instantly feel the warmth of the infrared rays deeply penetrating your body as the negative ions deliver healing signals to your body. Because the BioMat’s unique technology penetrates at the cellular level, it is capable of addressing a wide range of health issues.
